If you’re thinking about trying yoga, but aren’t sure where to start, then this article will help you. Yoga classes seem like a good option at first, but they often get quite crowded and finding time to attend during a busy week can be tricky. The best option that is left is “practicing yoga at home” – you’ll have the freedom of movement without having to worry about anyone else around.

You don’t even need to be skilled – all you really need is a bit of room (and some peace) to practice for a few minutes every morning. We’ve included a simple routine below which should help you get started safely.

Is Yoga at Home Suitable for Beginners?

Yoga for beginners at home offers flexibility. At home you have full control, you can adjust the pacing or intensity. For example, taking breaks between poses and repeating them often makes yoga enjoyable. You don’t have to rush through the motions just because others around you might be doing it differently. And many people find it easier to relax without worrying about being judged by anyone else watching their movements during sessions.

Yoga at home also has plenty of advantages like saving travel time while reducing overall expenses associated with joining clubs or studios etc., which could otherwise become quite costly depending on location too. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with building physical strength alongside working on mental health aspects since both play an important role together towards achieving better results!

The best part about doing it regularly is seeing improvements happen gradually in front of our eyes. But there’s one potential downside to home yoga which is, there won’t be a teacher around you to ensure proper form/body posture. But you can mitigate this issue by learning all yoga poses for beginners through a reputable source first (like an experienced teacher, great book or YouTube video). Once you’re ready to try them yourself at home, make sure you read every detail of each pose carefully and start slowly.

People with existing health issues or injuries — as well as pregnant women — should consult their doctors prior to beginning yoga.

What Is Hatha Yoga, and Why Is It Suitable for Beginners?

What Is Hatha Yoga, and Why Is It Suitable for Beginners?

Hatha yoga is generally a slow style yoga where you make simple poses with slow breathing. Most poses are held for some breaths. The pace is calm and the poses are basic, so new students can follow pretty easily. Hatha also teaches the link between breath and movement (a skill that supports every other style of yoga). Faster styles, such as power yoga, ask for more strength and are better left for later.

This guide covers a simple routine for yoga for beginners at home, based on Hatha and similar styles.

What Do Beginners Need Before Starting Yoga at Home?

Well, they don’t need much, but here are 3 important things that can get them ready for their first yoga session at home.

Prepare a Suitable Practice Space

Choose a spot that’s quiet and flat with lots of space for you to stretch your arms and legs. Make sure there are no pets, toys or anything sharp around. It helps if there’s plenty of fresh air and the right amount of natural light.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Wear clothing that allows you to stretch out freely, including leggings, shorts or a loose top.

Avoid tight-fitting pieces of clothing with stiff fabrics and avoid restrictive waists.Practice barefoot since your bare feet will have a stronger grip on the floor when compared to wearing socks.

Keep Equipment Simple

You’ll need at least one thing—your yoga mat. This will give cushion to your knees and also prevent you from slipping.

You could even add more comfort by laying a folded up towel or blanket underneath your knees for more padding. Two firm books or yoga blocks can also come into play here.

A Simple 20-Minute Morning Yoga Routine for Beginners

A Simple 20-Minute Morning Yoga Routine for Beginners

The entire routine of yoga for beginners at home consists of 7 steps that take about 20 minutes. Proceed with the asanas sequentially while breathing from the nose. Take a break when needed but try to get back to the flow afterwards.

1. Start With Gentle Breathing (2 Minutes)

Now, sit cross legged on your mat, or you can sit on a chair with both feet flat.

Place one hand on your belly and keep your eyes closed. Inhale slowly through your nose to a count of 4 and then exhale to a count of 6. Notice your belly rises and falls beneath your fingers as you continue this rhythm for the next 2 mins. It’s very calming and readies our lungs for some movements.

2. Warm Up with Cat/Cow Pose (3 Minutes)

Start on your hands and knees with your wrists directly underneath your shoulders and your knees underneath your hips.

Inhale as you lower down to your belly while lifting your chest up off the ground, looking at the space that’s between your arms.

Exhale as you round your spine over toward the floor, letting your chin rest close by the center of your chest. Hold this position for the length of one full inhale/exhale cycle before repeating this process again. Perform this sequence for 3 full minutes.

This pose helps to warm-up our spine, which can be helpful if we’re feeling especially stiff in our backs or necks.

3. Practice Mountain Pose (3 Minutes)

Stand tall with your feet hip width apart and arms at your sides.

Press down through all 4 corners of each foot into the floor.

Feel how the weight distributes itself even across both feet.

Let go of any tension around shoulders & maintain a level chin position. Breathe and stay there for 3 mins.

4. Try a Supported Standing Forward Fold (3 Minutes)

Lay 2 yoga blocks (or firm books) in front of your feet. Bend your knees ever so slightly then fold forwards from your hips, resting your hands onto the blocks with your head hanging heavy. Bend your knees as far as required in order to keep your lower back safe. Hold this fold for 3 mins, breathing slowly & evenly. When you’re ready, bend your knees again and slowly rise up avoiding dizzy spells.

This fold will stretch the back of your legs but also calm down your mind.

5. Move Into Low Lunge (4 Minutes)

Start on hands, knees, step your right foot forward between your hands, lower your back knee to the mat & pad it with a towel, that’s it. Slide your hips forward. Feel a stretch at the front of your back hip. Keep your front knee above your ankle, not past it. Rest your hands on your front thigh or lift them overhead. Hold for two minutes, then switch as well as repeat on the left side. This pose opens the hips. They get tight from sitting for so long.

6. Practice Sphinx Pose or Gentle Cobra Pose (3 Minutes)

Lie on your belly with your legs stretched behind you & for sphinx pose place your forearms on the mat with elbows under your shoulders. Press down through your forearms, lift your chest. For cobra pose place your palms near your ribs and, lift a tiny bit, keep your elbows bent, keep your neck long and, your shoulders away from your ears. Stay a minute. Rest. Repeat. Do three rounds. Sphinx is the milder choice, both poses strengthen the back and open the chest.

7. Finish With Savasana (2 Minutes)

Lie flat on your back with your legs apart and arms resting. Turn your palms upward, close your eyes, and let your feet fall open. Breathe in a normal rhythm, let every muscle grow soft & heavy. Stay in this pose. Cover yourself with a light blanket (optional).

How Often Should Beginners Practice Yoga?

A good rule for yoga for beginners at home is to start with 3 short, consistent sessions per week. As your body gets used to the exercise, add to this number by doing 5 days a week.

Remember, you need rest days for your muscles to repair themselves and get stronger. Eating a balanced diet can also help provide the nutrients your body needs for recovery. You might find that you’re getting better sleep and noticing looser muscles after practicing consistently over the course of four weeks.

Try sticking to the same time every day, for example right after waking up so it’s easier to make the commitment and keep up the routine. If possible, mark down each session on your calendar too!

Conclusion

This yoga for beginners routine is perfect for beginners who want to try doing yoga at home. Just follow along, do it three times per week, make sure all of the poses are gentle and give yourself rest when you need it. You’ll feel stronger and calmer as time passes — just like brushing your teeth! Each practice will get easier than the last. But before we start, check in with a doctor about any health issues that might require special attention.
